UK Retail Giant Co-op Faces Disruptions Following Cyberattack Attempt

UK retail giant Co-op has reported an attempted cyberattack, prompting the company to shut down certain IT systems as a precautionary measure. A spokesperson confirmed that “proactive steps” were taken to secure the systems, though disruptions have affected back-office and call center operations.

While the extent of the breach remains unclear, the company assured customers that its stores continue to operate normally. No changes in customer behavior have been requested at this time. However, Co-op has not disclosed whether the incident involved ransomware or if it notified the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), as required in suspected data breaches.

The retailer is collaborating with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to address the issue. This incident follows a recent cyberattack on Marks & Spencer, which left customers unable to collect orders and triggered regulatory notifications.
