Rivian Stockpiles Tariff-Free Batteries to Counter Price Hikes
Rivian has strategically accumulated a stockpile of tariff-free batteries to shield itself from the financial strain of former President Donald Trump’s auto tariffs. According to reports, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer secured a significant number of lithium iron phosphate batteries from China’s Gotion before the election, primarily for its Amazon delivery vans.
Following the election, Rivian collaborated with Samsung SDI to transfer a large inventory of batteries from South Korea to the U.S. This move was aimed at reducing cost pressures from tariffs imposed on imported auto components. While Trump later revised his initial plan of a blanket 25% tax, the adjusted tariffs are still expected to drive up vehicle prices.
“The stockpiles should help reduce the pricing pressure caused by Trump’s auto tariffs,” Bloomberg noted. Rivian’s foresight highlights the challenges automakers face in navigating trade policies while maintaining affordability in the competitive EV market.
