Apple Warns Users Worldwide of Government Spyware Attacks
Apple has issued warnings to users across 100 countries, notifying them of potential government spyware attacks. Among the recipients are an Italian journalist and a Dutch activist, both of whom shared their experiences publicly.
According to reports, “Apple detected a targeted mercenary spyware attack against your iPhone,” read the alert sent to users. The message emphasized that the attacks were likely personalized due to the victims’ professions or activities.
Ciro Pellegrino, an Italian journalist, confirmed receiving the notification, stating, “Did this really happen? Yes, it is not a joke.” Meanwhile, Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch activist, interpreted the alert as an attempt to intimidate and silence her.
This isn’t the first time Apple has flagged such threats. Last year, the company sent similar warnings about unspecified spyware campaigns. The recent alerts suggest a broader, ongoing issue tied to mercenary spyware—software often sold to governments by private firms.
WhatsApp has also intervened in past cases, disrupting spyware operations targeting journalists and activists. For instance, Francesco Cancellato, another Italian journalist, was notified of an attack linked to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli spyware vendor.
Digital rights groups like Citizen Lab are investigating these incidents, highlighting the growing threat of state-sponsored surveillance. As spyware becomes more sophisticated, tech companies and users alike must remain vigilant.
